Non-Destructive Testing

General NDT Services

  • Magnetic Particle - MT

    • MT is a non-destructive testing method used to detect surface and slightly subsurface flaws in ferromagnetic materials (such as carbon steel).  It is used routinely to inspect welds, piping, pressure vessels and structural steel components.

  • Liquid Penetrant Testing - PT

    • PT is used to detect casting, forging and welding surface defects such as hairline cracks, surface porosity, leaks in new products, and fatigue cracks on in-service components.  PT is a non-destructive examination method used to locate surface breaking discontinuities in non-porous materials (metals, plastics, or ceramics).  This method may be applied to ferrous and non-ferrous materials, although for ferrous components magnetic-particle inspection is often used instead for its subsurface detection capability.

  • Positive Material Identification - PMI

    • PMI is the analysis of a metallic alloy to establish composition by reading the percentage quantities of its constituent elements. The object of this nondestructive testing method is to identify metal alloys in place using a portable X-Ray fluorescent analyzer that determines the elemental composition of the material.

  • Ultrasonic Inspection - UT

    • UT is a non-destructive testing method capable of detecting both surface and sub-surface flaws in components and welds. UT can also be used to measure the thickness of materials, a common method of evaluating metal losses due to corrosion or erosion.

  • Industrial Radiography - RT

    • RT is a non-destructive test method that utilizes electromagnetic energy (radiation) from X-rays or gamma rays in order to detect both surface and internal discontinuities. Radiography shadow shots can be used to inspect process piping, pressure vessels and valves, providing an easily viewed and permanent record of the component that has been inspected.

  • Computed Radiography - CR

    • CR is used to assess internal or external corrosion/erosion losses in process piping, pressure vessels and valves. Based on it, one can estimate remaining thickness and wall losses. The computerized images allow easy data sharing and result in significant improvements in radiographic inspection productivity as well as faster identification of defects.

  • Portable Hardness Testing - HT

    • HT is a non-destructive testing method utilized to obtain the hardness value of a material. OGLTS uses the latest Portable Hardness Testing Technology to provide clients the information they require about the materials they are utilizing.

  • Ferrite Testing

    • Ferrite content analysis is a non-destructive testing method which provides critical data for austenitic stainless steel and duplex materials. The delta ferrite percentage or number allows a technical assessment of material corrosion susceptibility, mechanical properties, service suitability, and service reliability.

  • Field Spectroscopy - Spark Testing

    • Spark testing involves the use of a field portable electronic instrument specifically designed to analyze metals and measure and quantify the chemical content. The instrument gives elemental content of metallic and non-metallic compounds which make up the material under analysis and will give the percentage content of the elements present.

Advanced NDT Services

  • Phased Array - PA

    • Used to inspect welds and weld overlays, piping, pressure vessels, clad material, storage tanks and structural steel. Raised face flanges for damage on the ID bore and sealing face without having to disassemble them. This technique can be used during shutdowns, or on operating flanges. Complex geometries with a single probe.

  • Time of Flight Diffraction - TOFD

    • This ultrasonic inspection is commonly performed on welds and weld overlays, piping, pressure vessels, clad material, storage tanks and structural steel.  As fabricated heavy wall vessels and piping can be thoroughly assessed for fabrication flaws with TOFD.

  • Flange Inspection

    • OGLTS inspects in-service raised face flanges with phased array ultrasonic testing (PAUT); we detect bore wall loss and flange face damage without having to disassemble flanges. The technique detects flange ID bore and raised face wall losses.

  • Pulsed Eddy Current - PEC

    • Corrosion under Insulation - CUI

    • Corrosion under Fireproofing - CUF

      • PEC is a fast and cost effective electromagnetic inspection technique (along with guided wave testing, real time radiography and digital radiography) for honing in on suspect areas without stripping insulation.

  • 3D Laser Scanning Technology

    • Medium or large-scale 3D laser scans provide accurate measurements and 3D models of structures. This has many uses including measurement of distortions or settlement; provision of ‘as built’ dimensions; volumetric measurement and checking the fit of items such as replacement pipe spools and nozzles.

Tank and Tube Inspections

  • Tank Floor MFL Scans

    • Tank Floor MFL scanning is a non-destructive examination method which uses a magnetic field to detect corrosion and pitting in carbon steel.  A powerful magnet is scanned close to the surface to ‘saturate’ the steel with the magnetic field.

  • Vacuum Box Testing

    • Vacuum box testing is a non-destructive examination used when trying to locate weld seam leaks. A vacuum box and a compressor create a high or low pressure vacuum while a detergent solution is applied to the test area. The detergent bubbles, making leaks visible within the created pressure envelope.

  • Eddy Current Testing (ECT, Including Eddy Current Array): Tube Inspections for reliable heat exchangers.

    • ECT is used to detect pits, corrosion, erosion, cracking, and others, in stainless steels, brass, titanium, Inconel, copper, copper-nickel, and other non-ferrous tubes. This fast, accurate inspection technique has identified the flaws shown below. The tubes must be free of obstructions. However, the cleaning required is minimal..
